So what's the difference? You will be able to use only one symmetry type per session. The symmetry is chosen at random when Illustrator starts.

What about saved files? You can open and print files with previously created patterns, but most of the time, you will not be able to edit the patterns interactively. As active symmetry is randomly picked out of seventeen alternatives, chances are very good that the symmetry used in one session will not be available in another session.
